Insulating cell shades by Las Vegas Shutter Company - Summerlin Henderson Ken GreggFrom Summerlin to Henderson, Las Vegas has been feeling the winter-like temperatures from the polar vortex blanketing the US.

It’s days like this that make us think about ways to make our homes warmer, even in the desert.  You can lose 20% or more of your home’s heat just through windows.BUT, with  cellular shades or honeycomb shades, you can preserve much of the home’s climate without losing the natural light in the room.  Cellular shades are easy to clean and maintain.  They stack almost completely so you don’t see them when they are raised. …and the main benefit is that they can more than double the energy efficiency of double pane windows that don’t have a shade.

There are many different customizations you can make for cell shades, including lift options, fabric types, colors and cell sizes.

Cellular shades with honeycombs that are less than three-eighths of an inch are classified as “small cell shades.” These are typically very flexible, and give the end user excellent insulating properties. Small cells allow window treatments to have multiple cells for added insulation.

Mid-sized cells are in the range of a half inch. Most single cell shades are usually considered mid-sized. Like the smaller honeycombs, they are still fairly flexible, however, they don’t offer as much insulation as the small cells.

Larger cell shades don’t provide the end customer as much insulation as small or medium sized shades, but larger sized honeycombs support large window treatments very well, and should be considered for large windows.

Energy efficiency is a real economic benefit and investing in cell or honeycomb shades can pay for itself quickly through increased energy savings!

The sun here is not trivial. It’s intense almost all year round, as you know.

sun damaged carpetThe effects of the sun’s ultraviolet light is constant and destructive. Carpets and wood floors, especially, can endure permanent damage with just a little bit of regular sunlight exposure. Ultraviolet (or “UV”) light literally bleaches your floors and carpets.  The sun’s infrared light (“IR”) is where the heat comes from.

The extreme solution is not to have the sunlight come into the room, but a sunless room isn’t what most of us want.  Blinds, curtains, shutters or shades can help regulate sunlight, but the intensity of the Las Vegas sun can even damage these window coverings. Not protecting your floors and even your window coverings means thousands of dollars of repair work every couple of years.

So, what’s the solution?

Solar screens.

howsolarscreenswork-1The majority of sunlight striking an unprotected glass window passes through into the home, and a small percent is reflected. Solar screens reduce the amount of sunlight striking the window. Most of the sun’s heat is absorbed or reflected by the screen and carried away by convective air currents created by the warm screen. In midsummer, as much as 230 BTUs can heat up an unprotected square foot of glass. This is a scientific way of saying you can almost cook on unprotected glass that receives direct sunlight!

With solar screens from Las Vegas Shutter Company, up to 90% of the sun’s heat and glare can be deflected and dissipated before it strikes the window.

Call Ken Gregg if you have any additional questions about solar screens and how they can help your home and protect your home’s interior.  Ken can help you review all of your options and show you some samples.  He and his team have been installing solar screens, sun shade treatments and all other kinds of home window coverings for two decades in Henderson, Summerlin and all over the Las Vegas area. Plantation shutters are among the most durable window treatments and can last for years if properly maintained. However, their efficient design doesn’t mean you can completely ignore them after installation. Here are a few tips on how to keep your plantation shutters clean.

TIP #1:

Fill a container with about a half-gallon of water, preferably distilled water, although it is not required. For more difficult to remove dirt or stains, use a water-based household cleaner or add a small amount of mild soap or detergent to the water.

DON’T use chlorine based cleaners or other cleaners containing organic solvents. These can degrade the surface appearance and durability of the shutters.

TIP #2:

Use a soft cloth and dip it into the water and cleaner. Clean both sides of the shutters, watching for the small areas between strings that may be missed by the cloth and require extra attention.

DON’T use cleaning utensils with rough edges that may scratch or damage the louvers (slats).

TIP #3:

Dip a dry cloth into a new container of clean water and wipe all the louvers, or slats, of the shutters with the damp cloth. This will remove any remaining cleaning residue, which could reduce the durability of your shutters.

TIP #4

Dry the shutters with a soft, dry cloth. This is important even for synthetic shutters, but VERY important for real wood shutters to avoid warping the shutters from water absorption.

Call Ken Gregg at Las Vegas Shutter Company - 702-896-6900Window blinds are available in a variety of materials – wood and synthetic, man-made materials. Each option offers quality products.  In this post, we discuss the pros and cons of vinyl versus wood blinds.

Vinyl blinds are often called “faux wood” or “imitation wood” blinds. The vinyl is pressed or extruded to “look” like real wood but the materials resist warping, cracking and fading better than real wood. Vinyl blinds are a great choice for bathrooms, kitchens and any generally humid environment. They are also a good choice for homes with children, as they can stand up to a kid’s wear.

Another synthetic alternative to real wood is composite wood. The slats of composite wood blinds generally have a wood core coated with a high-tech polymer. Composite wood blinds are slightly more upscale but have a more refined look than plain vinyl.

Wood blinds also have unique benefits that should be considered. The slats of wood blinds are made from hardwoods such as basswood. Real wood blinds tend to be lighter than vinyl and thus require less “ladders” (the strings that support each slat). The weight of a window blind is an important consideration if you are buying a horizontal blind for a large window, and it is easier to lift and lower a large wood blind than a faux wood blind.

The main reason for choosing wood over synthetic alternatives is aesthetics. Some people prefer only real wood blinds. Real wood blinds can look like a piece of fine furniture, however, if you intend to paint your wood blinds, you might as well buy a more durable synthetic blind.

To summarize, synthetic blinds are better for hot, humid rooms where moisture resistance is important. Synthetic blinds are also good for high traffic areas and windows or doors that receive a lot of direct sun. Synthetics are also less expensive than wood blinds. Wood blinds are better if you desire a more upscale look and for large windows where the weight of a vinyl blind might be excessive.  Also, beware of cheap foam blinds that are flimsy, sag quickly and often have inferior headrails or other weak components.

One suggestion: you might consider installing authentic wood blinds in more formal rooms to provide an upscale look and install synthetic window blinds in working or private rooms where guests are not entertained.
