Big window openings often pose big challenges when figuring out the best way to provide flexible covering.

Conventionally, we think about the standard vertical blinds solution, but there are more creative choices available you should also consider. We review a few of them in this post.

Folding Panels and Folding Doors

Natural folding doors can give you a natural, modern look.

Woven wood or bamboo folding doors are ideal for use as room dividers and ways to address treatment for extra-large windows and sliding doors. These blinds are usually hand-made and hand-operated to insure no cords will pose any potential threats. You have choices between light and dark filtering materials. Liner attachments come in white, beige or cream. The high-quality, lightweight aluminum track folds the panels in an accordion-style.

Panel Track Shades and Sliding Panels

Similar in some ways to folding doors, panel track shades run on a track above the panels that allows them to be stacked on top of one another when opened.

A sliding panel solution is one of the most popular options for oversized windows or sliding doors. Panel track shades come in a large variety of different colors and patterns. Budget friendly options are available in light-filtering neutrals like linen. Heavier filtering options are also available that have blackout fabrics or solar shade-type fabrics with 5% openings.  For those who want as much sun as possible to filter through their windows, choose a light-filtering or solar shade fabric. Sliding panels are ideal for large windows facing the east and west during those glare-heavy sunrises and sunsets.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are the traditional option for extra large windows. Due to their popularity, you can usually match your existing window treatment design with options in synthetic wood, vinyl or fabric. Some models give the appearance of drapery while acting like a blind because their translucent fabric gives off an elegant, light look. These are perfect for sliding doors or oversized windows.

Other Options

You can also cover your oversized windows with Plantation Shutters or Standard Roller/Solar Shades, depending on how large the window or sliding door is. Plantation shutters can be built in sections, although this option could get very pricey very quickly!

In summary, you have more options than you likely have been considering.

Plantation shutters are among the most durable window treatments and can last for years if properly maintained. However, their efficient design doesn’t mean you can completely ignore them after installation. Here are a few tips on how to keep your plantation shutters clean.

TIP #1:

Fill a container with about a half-gallon of water, preferably distilled water, although it is not required. For more difficult to remove dirt or stains, use a water-based household cleaner or add a small amount of mild soap or detergent to the water.

DON’T use chlorine based cleaners or other cleaners containing organic solvents. These can degrade the surface appearance and durability of the shutters.

TIP #2:

Use a soft cloth and dip it into the water and cleaner. Clean both sides of the shutters, watching for the small areas between strings that may be missed by the cloth and require extra attention.

DON’T use cleaning utensils with rough edges that may scratch or damage the louvers (slats).

TIP #3:

Dip a dry cloth into a new container of clean water and wipe all the louvers, or slats, of the shutters with the damp cloth. This will remove any remaining cleaning residue, which could reduce the durability of your shutters.

TIP #4

Dry the shutters with a soft, dry cloth. This is important even for synthetic shutters, but VERY important for real wood shutters to avoid warping the shutters from water absorption.

Call Ken Gregg at Las Vegas Shutter Company - 702-896-6900Almost every week, a child dies from strangulation by the cords of a window blind. Such tragedies are unnecessary and entirely avoidable.  Below we discuss some options to make sure the window treatments in your home are safe for young children.

The most popular window treatment option, in terms of child safety, would be a cordless blind.  Cordless blinds are available in honeycomb shades, pleated shades, and roller shades and offer a wide variety of colors, textures, and patterns to choose from. Cordless blinds operate with a simple pull up, and pull down method, which eliminates anything hanging down that could be a choking or a strangling hazard.  Cordless blinds present a clean look and easy operation.

Another alternative is to consider shutters.  This option offers an upgraded look with no cords.

Call Ken Gregg at Las Vegas Shutter Company - 702-896-6900A final alternative is a shade with a simple cord on one side and a cord cleat that the cord can be wrapped around.  Even blinds with multiple cords can become child-safe by using cord cleats.

In summary, there are lots of different options that can fit into just about any budget.  Call Ken Gregg and invite him to stop by your home and introduce you to all the possible child-safe options available for blinds and shutters.

Each has its own set of advantages.  We’ll attempt to quickly summarize the key points for you here, and we encourage you to contact Ken Gregg for a more in-depth discussion about which may be ideal for your situation.

Cost is often the main driver.  Blinds are usually less expensive, but you can find some affordable shutters at reasonable prices, too.

Space Considerations

Blinds stay within the window frame and don’t require any space considerations related to swinging into a room.  You have to consider the swing radius into your room if you have shutters, and this can impair where you can place furniture without blocking the shutter’s arc.

Light Considerations

Shutters require a bit of supporting framework which blocks some of the light from entering the room.  Blinds don’t have the same framework and thus allow more light into the room. Good blinds can be raised or parted into a balance so that, when raised, you don’t even see the blades of the blind.

Usually, blinds carry a smaller term on the warranty, such as 3-5 years.  Shutters, however, typically carry a longer warranty, such as 15 years.

Contribution to Home Value

While shutters are typically more expensive to install, they add more value to a home’s price when it’s time to sell.  Shutters have a much more finished look in a home versus blinds; however, high quality blinds can often contribute the same value to a home price as good shutters.

This consideration is less empirical than the others, but something you should consider nonetheless.  Shutters and blinds can create a different ambiance to a room and sometimes you just have to give both the “eye test” to see which better fits your taste. This is an area where a seasoned consultant like Ken Gregg can really help.

In summary, there is no clear choice for either blinds or shutters.  Weigh the pros and cons of each topic above.  Then, call Ken Gregg and invite him to stop by and give you a free design consultation.
